Size also matters on the farm, where
feed that is given to animals in a pasture will become lost, trampled and
wasted if it is too small for the animals
in question. It may also be ignored if it
is too large to be picked up. The pellet, when broken down in the animal's
stomach, also affects performance if
the grist spectrum of the individual
component ingredients is not suitable
for the animal.
Baby piglets have much different
stomach conditions than sows, something that must be considered when
formulating.
CREEP FEED DIETS
It is also worth mentioning creep

and screen sizes, depending on what
feed you wish to make and what die
diameter is being used. In most mills,
screen sizes and hammermill speeds are
controlled by PLC, and you build into
your stored formulae parameters several
operating parameters that control mill
operation. It may take a while to figure
out which settings produce the best results, but controlling grist spectrum in
relation to die size will most certainly
affect pellet quality.
You cannot hope to use the same
grist spectrum for 3-mm pellets being fed to young animals as you would
when pressing 8-mm pellets for large
ruminants.
