New European feed industry group formed
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - On Sept. 15, the European Feed Technology Center (EUFETEC) was officially launched. As a representative of the European feed industry, EUFETEC said it plans to take up
the many challenges facing the industry and identify opportunities to
increase the sector's competitiveness.
EUFETEC's mission is to support feed sector innovation through:
* harmonized, innovative research;
* development of practical guidelines and organizing training; and
* setting up service provisions to help the companies with practical

implementation.
The organization sent a questionnaire to different European
countries to identify the key priorities for producers of feed additives, premixtures and compound feed. Research priorities for the
organization include cross-contamination and residues of certain
molecules in meat, milk and eggs with respect to feed and food
quality and safety.
The organization plans to offer training regarding employee occupational health and dust explosions.

San Miguel to buy grain terminal
MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Food and beverage giant San Miguel
Corp. expects to acquire the Mariveles Grains Terminal, which is
located in the Philippine province of Bataan, by year end.
The company is close to signing a joint-venture deal with trading
giant Toyota Tsusho Corp. for the acquisition of the terminal, said
to be one of the most modern in Southeast Asia.
San Miguel President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang
told reporters on Aug. 22 that they would acquire the grain terminal
from Asian Terminals, Inc. for P1.6 billion ($35 million).
Under the joint venture, San Miguel will shoulder 60% of the
cost, while Toyota Tsusho, a trading company partly owned by Toy-

ota Motor Corp., will bear the rest. "Once the papers are finished,
we will start the operation," Ang said.
San Miguel has been in talks with Asian Terminals, which owns
a 20-year contract to develop and operate the grain terminal until
2013, for the past five years, but had been unsuccessful in closing
the deal.
Ang said the facility would boost the 500,000-tonne-a-year production of the company's feed mill.
Asian Terminals earlier said it would use the proceeds of the
Mariveles Terminal sale to fund the modernization and expansion
of the South Harbor, the country's largest port.
