Scoular acquires McAlister Grain
OMAHA, NEBRASKA, U.S. - The Scoular Co. on Sept. 18 said it has acquired the
assets of McAlister Grain Co., Friars Point,
Mississippi, U.S. The acquisition includes
grain-handling facilities in Friars Point and
Clarksdale in Mississippi and Helena and

feed imports rise 70%
HANOI, VIETNAM - Vietnam's General
Statistics Office said on Aug. 28 that the country is forecast to spend more than $1.3 billion
to import animal feeds between January and
August, an increase of 70% over last year.
In addition to poultry and cattle feed,
the country also imports materials for feed
production, such as corn and soybeans.
Vietnam's main import partners have been
India, Argentina, the U.S., Indonesia, Thailand and China.
Vietnam's Finance Ministry recently
lowered import taxes on whey and soybean
used to make animal feeds to 2%, down
from 10%, and to zero percent from 2%,
respectively.
Vietnam spent nearly $1.1 billion to import animal feeds and related products in
2007, up 52% from 2006.

Grainfarmers, Centaur Grain merge
for grain marketing
AYLSHAM, ENGLAND - Grainfarmers and Centaur Grain announced plans on
Sept. 12 to establish a major new grain marketing and input supply business that will
be controlled by British farmers. The new
company will have a business model focusing on building long-term supply chain partnerships creating value for its farmer-owners
and its customers, the companies said.
The new business will be branded Openfield and is expected to handle around 4 million tonnes of grain, or about 20% of the
U.K. market.
"Openfield will have the flexibility, scale and
high level of service which we believe is needed in today's marketplace to capture improved
value across the supply chain," said Richard
Beldam, proposed chairman of Openfield. "Increasingly, we believe this can only be achieved
by companies that combine a national presence
with a scale and structure that ensures efficient
continuity of supply to its customers, managed
through a network of regional offices.
