Horizon Milling to close Port Colborne flour mill
PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO, CANADA - Horizon Milling G.P. announced
it will halt operations at its Port Colborne,
Ontario, Canada wheat flour mill on Oct.
30. The mill, which was built in 1940, has
daily capacity of 13,200 cwts.
John Holliday, vice-president and general manager for Horizon Milling G.P.,
said the move was difficult and the company had been working with the UFCW
Local 416P Union since 2006 to ensure
the mill's stability and growth.
"Since that time the economic landscape has changed considerably, and recent business conditions have eroded the
model we were hoping could keep this
facility viable to the benefit of all stakeholders," Holliday said.
Horizon Milling G.P. is a partnership
formed between Cargill and CHS, Inc., to
purchase the Canadian grain-based food
service and industrial businesses owned
by Smucker Foods of Canada Co.
In addition to Port Colborne, Horizon
Milling G.P. operates a wheat flour mill
with 16,500 cwts of capacity in Montreal,
Quebec, Canada, and a 14,000-cwt facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
