WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. - Organizations
representing the wheat industry in the United
States (U.S.), Canada and Australia announced
on May 14 that they will work toward the goal
of synchronized commercialization of biotech
traits in the wheat crop.
Noting that "none of us hold a veto over the
actions of others," they agreed it was in the
best interest of all three producer communities
to introduce biotechnology in a coordinated
fashion to minimize market disruption.
The announcement came in a statement of
joint principles on the issue of biotechnology
in wheat, which has been a sensitive subject in
some parts of the world, including major export markets in Europe and Asia. There is currently no commercial production of genetically
modified wheat anywhere in the world.The
statement highlighted the importance of wheat
to the food supply and declining acres in all
three countries due in part to competition from
crops that have the advantages of biotech traits.
The statement also noted the slow growth trend
of wheat yields compared to other crops and
the lack of public and private investment in
wheat research worldwide.
Noting that biotechnology is not the only
answer to a host of agronomic questions facing
wheat production, the groups agreed it could

AIPC earnings rise
sharply in second quarter
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, U.S. - Earnings at American Italian Pasta Co. (AIPC)
soared 177% in the second quarter, boosted
by a 16% gain in sales and 12% increase in
volumes. Net income for the second quarter ended April 3 was $26,196,000, equal
to $1.27 per share on the common stock, up
sharply from $9,444,000, or 50¢ per share, in
the same period a year ago. Revenues climbed
to $162,325,000, which compared with
$139,568,000 in the previous year.
"Clearly, our strategy and great execution
by the entire AIPC employee team are paying
off," said Jack Kelly, chief executive officer.
"Volume was a key factor in our overall revenue growth, handily outpacing the industry's
overall growth rate. Moving forward, we are
well positioned to capitalize on what we believe will be a lasting upward trajectory in consumption, given pasta's value, versatility and
nutritional benefits."
For the six months ended April 3, net income was $52,224,000, or $2.56 per share, up
from $10,838,000, or 58¢ per share. Net sales
were up 33% to $333,531,000.
