U.S. wheat inventory up 19% from 2008
WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. - The National Agricultural Statistics
Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated
stocks of wheat held in all positions in the U.S. on Sept. 1, the beginning of the second quarter of the 2009-10 crop year, at 2.21 billion
bushels, up more than 357 million bushels, or 19%, from 1.86 billion
bushels on the same date in 2008.
On-farm stocks were estimated at 840 million bushels, up 32% from
635.7 million bushels as the Sept. 1, 2008, farm inventory. Sept. 1 offfarm stocks were estimated at 1.38 billion bushels, up 12% from 1.2
billion bushels a year earlier.
The USDA said the indicated wheat disappearance in June-August
2009 was 661 million bushels, down 30% from the same span in 2008.

Durum stocks were estimated at 103.3 million bushels, up 80%
from 58.8 million bushels on Sept. 1, 2008. First-quarter 2009-10 disappearance of durum was estimated at 31.9 million bushels, down 4%
from the year-earlier span.
Stocks of corn on Sept. 1 were estimated at 1.67 billion bushels, up
3% from 1.62 billion bushels a year ago. June-August 2009 disappearance was estimated at 2.59 billion bushels compared with 2.4 billion
bushels a year earlier.
Soybean stocks on Sept 1 were estimated at 138.2 million bushels, down 33% from more than 205 million bushels a year earlier. The
USDA estimated June-August soybean disappearance at 458 million
bushels, down 3% from the same span in 2008.

Kazakhstan set to export grain to China
ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN - Kazakhstan's Agriculture Minister
Akylbek Kurishbayev said on Oct. 20 that Kazakhstan intends to
supply grain to China to compensate for poor sales in traditional
markets.
The Central Asian republic gathered 22.7 million tonnes of grain in
bunker weight in 2009, one of its best harvests in the past five years.
"It is necessary, first of all, to solve the problem of grain sales: world
wheat prices have sagged amid the financial crisis and an increase in
carryover grain reserves due to lower grain trade volumes and are currently at their lowest level in the past few years," Kurishbayev said.

He also said that Kazakhstan's major wheat importing countries,
including former Soviet republics and the European Union, were stepping up their own wheat production.
"This situation has negatively affected our domestic market:
traders are in no hurry with grain purchases and assumed a waitand-see position. Due to the absence of grain shipments, elevators
in the country's major grain-growing regions are overfilled with
grain," he said.
At the same time, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov said that
an agreement had been reached on Kazakh grain supplies to China.
