Demand continues for larger grain storage and
handling capacities

he demand for larger grain storage and handling capacities is
continuing to dominate customers' requests worldwide, according to
respondents of a recent World Grain
survey of equipment suppliers.
Across the globe, there also is an increasing demand for commercial hopperbottom silos. These are popular as they
allow for total cleanout, and there is no
need to operate a sweep auger. They can
also be constructed in less time, since the
silos are smaller in size and require less
foundation construction.
Storage of specialty grains and enhanced demand for biosecurity are
driving new construction in many areas around the world. Customers are
also concerned about employee safety
and are demanding that equipment be
designed to meet safety standards.
Depending on the location of a projHFWFXVWRPHUVDUHPDNLQJVSHFL¿FUHquests for seismic reactions, high wind
speeds, special levels of galvanization
and fumigation-ready silos. Others
want closed catwalks, which allow
them to be used throughout the year.
Additionally, many customers want
complete system designs from one
company.
,QWHUPVRIIDFLOLW\W\SHVÀRXUPLOOing is very strong as is the brewing industry. Feed mills and port facilities are
also seeing an increase in expansion
projects as well as new construction.
The declining cost of steel over the
last several months is helping to stimulate demand for grain storage. Grain
storage manufacturers are hopeful the
trend will continue. One supplier noted that there is increasing demand for
steel silos versus concrete.
Several suppliers noted growth in
South America, particularly Brazil,

Colombia, Chile and Paraguay. Eastern
Europe is another area of growth, with
one supplier saying they see unlimited
drying and storage demands in the region. Mexico was another region mentioned by suppliers, as well as Asian
nations such as Taiwan.
The following is a sample of projects
completed in recent months involving
some of the world's biggest manufacturers of grain storage and handling
equipment.

model 7248ESZ1 with a diameter of
21.95 meters and eave height of 14.63 meters. Capacity is 5,127 tonnes for wheat,
with a total capacity of 120,000 tonnes.

project. Filling equipment capacity is 175
tph and discharge equipment is 100 tph.
