The American Feed Industry Association
(AFIA) and the National
Feed
Ingredients
Association
(NFIA) have approved a merger
plan for the two organizations.
NFIA's board of directors approved
the 10-point plan in February at its
mid-year meeting in Chicago. AFIA
board approval followed at its winter
meeting. The merge plan must
be approved by each association.
July 1 is the tentative target date for
consolidation.
The Australian Wheat Board
(AWB) is joining forces with two
Asian customers to build a flour
mill, feed mill and grain storage facility
in the Shenzhen special economic
zone at the Chiwan port in
China. The AWB in late 1991 was
given approval to take an 8% equity
valued at $1.2 million in Shenzhen
Southseas Grain Industries Ltd., a
business that was incorporated to
build the flour mill, feed mill and
grain storage facility. The site, located
just north of Hong Kong, is
adjacent to a deepwater wharf capable
of receiving vessels of up to
60,000 tonnes.
Paul Coker has been named managing
director of Rank Hovis McDougall
PLC following the resignation
of Timothy Howden. Coker,
whose appointment was announced
by Stanley Metcalfe, RHM's chairman
and chief executive, previously
was deputy managing director of
the flour milling, baking and food
group. He came up in the business
through the accounting and financial
departments. Howden resigned
from RHM to join Albert Fisher, a
British-based fresh fruit and vegetable
company, as a main board director
and as CEO of Albert Fisher's
European operations.
2002
The Al Ghurair Group of Dubai
plans to invest $100 million in the
World-Grain.com / World Grain / April 2022
grain industry, including the financing
of new flour mills and silos in
Sudan. According to the Gulf News,
a $30 million flour mill also is being
set up in Sri Lanka, and two other
projects are planned in Algeria. This
will make the family-owned Al Ghurair
Group one of the largest flour
mills in the region.
The government of Indonesia has
disclosed a plan to allow Bulog, the
state-owned commodity trading and
distribution agency, to expand its
activities beyond the domestic rice
trade, with the aim of increasing
profits. At one time, Bulog was the
sole importer of wheat into Indonesia,
but the flour milling and trading
companies now are the main participants
in wheat trade. It also loosened
its monopoly over flour distribution,
as the government has tried
to remove itself from industry. Most
of the changes in Bulog's business
will go into effect by June 2003.
2012
Glencore International PLC, one of
the world's largest publicly traded
commodity suppliers, announced on
March 20 that it has agreed to acquire
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada-based
Viterra for C$6.1 billion. Along with
Glencore, it had been rumored in media
reports that Archer Daniels Midland
Co., Richardson International,
Agrium, and Cargill were interested
in Viterra. The end of Canada's single
desk grain marketing monopoly
has resulted in a flurry of interest in
the region. Glencore said it will consolidate
Viterra's executive offices
in Saskatchewan and make the Regina
office the platform for its North
American agricultural operations and
for expansion into the United States.
The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB)
announced March 1 that it has
reached a strategic grain agreement
with Cargill, the first agreement for
grain handling services since the
announced end of the CWB's moWORLD

nopoly.

who market through the CWB with
delivery access and port handling
services.

A French Autorite de la Concurrence
issued a decision on March 13
finding anti-competitive agreements
by German and French millers in
the packaged flour sector a total of
€242.4 million. The Autorite said a
cartel of German and French millers
aimed to limit imports of flour
between France and Germany, while
two anti-competitive agreements by
French millers were aimed at fixing
prices, limiting output and sharing
the customer base for packaged flour.
Seaboard Overseas and Trading
Group has completed a lease transaction
under which the company has
acquired control of a flour mill and
feed manufacturing facility in Tema,
Ghana. The facility is part of GhanaAgro
Food Complex Ltd. (Gafco),
owned by partnership of the Ghana
government, an institutional logical
investment group and Industrie-Bau
Nord Group (IBN), a global operating
company based in Germany and
Switzerland. The Gafco flour mill
has daily milling capacity of 3,300
cwts. Seaboard estimated the entire
flour and feed capacity at 100,000
tonnes annually and noted that the
Bühler-equipped mill packages multiple
types of flour (bread, biscuit
and specialty local flour).
Greg Page, chief executive officer
of Cargill, on March 22 toured the
company's newest feed mill in Ha
Nam Province, Vietnam. The new
mill will begin production by the
third quarter of 2012, bringing the
total number of Cargill feed mills in
Vietnam to nine.
