Rank Hovis McDougall PLC,
Windsor, UK, will launch next
year a major multi-million-pound
modernization program designed to
keep the company in the forefront
of modern milling technology. The
program will be initiated at the company's
mill in Manchester, England,
where two new milling units will be
housed in the shell of the existing
building. The new units will specialize
in the milling for wholemeal
flour, which is the most dynamic
sector in the brown flours market.
A £4.5 million contract to build and
equip a complete flour mill for Tempo
Mills, Ltd. of Onitsha, Anambra
State, Nigeria, has been won by
Henry Simon Ltd. of Stockport,
UK. The mill will be situated on an
undeveloped site in Umunya, near
Onitsha. It is the latest and largest
single unit to be built by Henry
Simon in Nigeria, being designed
for milling capacity of 400 tonnes
(wheat equivalent) per 24 hours.
R. Jeffrey Smith has been named
general manager of ContiStaley Export
Co., a newly formed partnership
of Continental Grain Co., New
York City, New York, US, and A.E.
Staley Manufacturing Co., Decatur,
Illinois, US. Smith has been vice
president, meals and derivatives in
Continental Grain's World Grain
Division since 1982.
1994
Henk Struving has joined ChoreTime/Brock
BV as a regional sales
manager for Northern Europe.
Struving's responsibilities include
sales of the company's poultry, pig
and livestock equipment lines as
well as grain storage and handling
equipment.
2004
Archer Daniels Midland Co.
(ADM) and Marubeni have established
a joint agreement to seek new
business development in specialty
grains and oilseeds for the Japanese
market. Under terms of the agreement,
ADM will be responsible
for exporting specialty grains and
oilseeds from the United States to
Marubeni, which will then market
the products in Japan. Marubeni is a
leading grain trading and feed milling
company in Japan.
US Wheat Associates has announced
a series of executive
changes. Vince Peterson, currently
USW's regional vice president of
Europe, will succeed Paul Dickerson
as vice president of overseas
operations, effective July 1. Replacing
Peterson will be George
Galasso, currently regional director
for North Africa, who will be promoted
to vice president. Another
regional director, Ed Wiese, will
be promoted to vice president and
will continue to be responsible for
market development in most of subSaharan
Africa.
Cargill has agreed to buy the animal
feed business of Agway Inc.
for about $10 million, Cargill announced
at the end of January. Agway
filed for bankruptcy in October
2002, and the feed unit was its last
major asset. Cargill Animal Nutrition
and Agway Feed Nutrition will
operate separately until the purchase
is completed, Cargill said.
2014
Bunge Ltd. announced on Jan. 20
that Pedro Parente, president and
chief executive officer of its Brazilian
operating company, will retire
effective June 30. Parente, 60, has
led Bunge's Brazilian operations
since joining the company in January
2010. Bunge expects to name
the successor for Parente in the
coming months.
National Foods announced on Jan.
21 that it has reopened its corn mill
in Mutare, Zimbabwe, which has

been inactive for the past six years.
Jeremy Brooks, chief executive officer
of National Foods, said the
company was delighted to be bringing
the mill back into service. It has
been under care and maintenance
for most of the time since Zimbabwe
introduced multi-currency
trading in 2009. National Foods
noted that the mill will complement
its operations at the Harare and Bulawayo
facilities and help ensure
nationwide availability of its products
Red Seal roller meal and Red
Seal Pearlenta.
Two people were killed and 10 injured
in an explosion on Jan. 20 at
the International Nutritional feed
plant in Omaha, Nebraska, US, according
to news reports. Omaha Police
Lt. Darci Tierney said all 38 of
the workers who were in the building
at the time have been accounted
for, so the death toll wasn't expected
to grow. The cause of the blast has
yet to be determined. The company
makes nutritional supplements for
livestock and poultry feed.
Viterra Inc. announced that it has
reached an agreement to purchase
certain assets of Lethbridge Inland
Terminal Ltd. (LIT), including a
high throughput elevator with a
capacity of 42,000 tonnes. LIT's
board of directors are unanimously
recommending its shareholders approve
the transaction with Viterra.
In November, Viterra announced it
was spending over C$34 million in
Alberta through an expansion and
upgrade of its facility in Grassy
Lake as well as building a high
throughput terminal in Grimshaw.
Cargill said it has purchaseed a 5%
stake in the Ukrainian agriculture
group, Ukrlandfarming. Ukrlandfarming
is a major producer of
eggs, grain, meat and sugar. Several
other projects, including logistics,
are being discussed between Cargill
and Ukrlandfarming.
