Bühler ready to simplify sustainability journey
UZWIL, SWITZERLAND - Companies wanting to know
more about their environmental footprint can visit Bühler during
the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM)
Annual Conference and Expo April 16-19 in Salt Lake City,
Utah, US.
The pressure on companies to quantify and reduce their environmental
footprint is increasing. More than 5,000 companies
have voluntarily signed up to the Science Based Targets
initiative (SBTi) or are setting net 0 goals. The inflation reduction
agreement 2022 put $369 billion into various initiatives
that contribute to the US climate targets. More regulation
also is entering the market, the SEC signaling intentions to
increase reporting on climate topics.
Sustainability, and in particular environmental sustainability,
is also an opportunity for companies. As many companies
set targets to reduce carbon emissions, they coincide
with key operational metrics such as energy reductions or
yield improvements, either reducing costs or increasing efficiency.

with a lower environmental footprint, and gain price
Ocrim acquires storage company SIMA srl
CREMONA, ITALY - Ocrim SpA has acquired SIMA srl,
which specializes in the design and construction of storage systems.
The acquisition is a significant step in Ocrim's growth
strategy and its ability to offer complete solutions, covering the
entire production chain and integrating the storage of cereal and
finished products in the mill. Based in Spresiano, Italy, SIMA has
more than 40 years of experience in storage solutions.
The companies share values such as honesty and reliability, a
sense of collaboration and attention toward their human capital,
Ocrim said. With the acquisition, Ocrim said it can add a new
piece to its industrial supply chain, as well as to the agri-food supply
chain, " the Italian agri-food chain choice, " of which Ocrim
has been a spokesman for eight years.

strategy, " said Alberto Antolini, chief executive officer of Ocrim.

LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS, US - Great Western
Manufacturing has hired Dawson Schroeder as leader in training.
Schroeder is the fourth generation of the family at Great
Western Manufacturing.
" We are looking forward to Dawson to learn, grow and become
an integral part of Great Western's future, " the company said.
Schroeder received a bachelor's degree in supply chain
management and organizational management from Kansas
State University in 2020. He started his career with Ferrellgas,

Ocrim aims to capitalize on the synergies between the two
companies, combining its experience in the milling sector with
SIMA's specialization in storage facilities.
Dawson Schroeder joins Great Western Manufacturing
completing the management development program in Liberty,
Missouri, US, before transferring to Statesboro, Georgia, US,
where he worked as logistics supervisor. In that role, Schroeder
forecasted customer demand, analyzed usage to develop delivery
schedules and manage more than 20 truck drivers to deliver liquid
propane gas across Georgia and South Carolina.
He moved back to Kansas City after two and a half years
and continued to work for Ferrellgas remotely until the end
of 2023.

To realize these benefits, companies can use both greenhouse
gas (GHG) accounting and lifecycle assessments to
quantify the emissions of operations and their products.
A high-quality quantification can highlight carbon hotspots
and help to focus reduction efforts to reduce cost and carbon
at the same time. Key steps to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions
include optimized grain drying with efficient pest control and
food safety measures, use of sensors to measure energy and
yield across the mill and targeting the key areas such as air
use, power supply and motors and key machinery. Key steps
to reduce Scope 3 emissions focus on increasing yield (with
key machinery such as optical sorters) and engaging suppliers,
using the life-cycle assessment (LCA) method to quantify
emissions per tonne of flour.
The LCA method supports companies to quantify environmental
impacts, and create a data-based discussion, enabling
them to create a competitive advantage and build a favorable
business case for sustainable products. When sustainability is
profitable, it will create impact at scale.
