Carrs Flour Mills has ordered a complete
modernization of its Silloth
mill in Cambria, England, at a cost
of £1 million. The contract has been
awarded to Henry Simon, whose
design will provide Carrs with the
same capacity as the existing mill
(250 tonnes of wheat per 24 hours)
in half the space currently occupied.
The new mill will incorporate the
latest technical advances, including
the first installation of the new Mark
3 " K " roller mills, and the H20-KAY
automated grain damping system.
The new plant is scheduled to produce
flour in mid-1984.
1993
P.T. Bogasari Flour Mills is adding
a new milling facility to its complex
at Jakarta, Indonesia, already the
world's largest flour milling operation
on a single site. The company
also is discussing the construction
of a 1,000-tonne mill at Belawan,
in North Sumatra, as a joint venture
with the Rodamas Group and ABC
Group, both of Indonesia, and Gold
Coin of Malaysia. The new Jakarta
mill, to be completed in November,
will have a daily grinding capacity
of 1,600 tonnes of wheat. Currently,
Bogasari's Jakarta complex consists
of five plants with a total daily
grinding capacity of 5,400 tonnes of
wheat.
The American Association of Cereal
Chemists (AACC) announced the
election of Darrell Medcalf to president-elect,
Okkyung Kim Chung
to director, and Deborah Rogers to
secretary. They will officially begin
their terms on the board of directors
after the AACC annual meeting
in Miami Beach, Florida, US.
Medcalf, who is president of Health
Comm, Inc., will succeed William
A. Atwell of the Pillsbury Co. as
president-elect.
Six investor groups are competing
for acquisition of five maize milling
plants being privatized by the
Mexican government, according
to El Financiero
International, a
weekly business newspaper published
in Mexico City. Each of the
groups put up a $1 million deposit
on July 30, which allowed them to
take part in the bidding. The six
groups are Cargill de Mexico, Estrategias
y Planeacion Avanzadas,
Empresas Santos (with Bimbo del
Norte and Archer Daniels Midland
Co.), Grupo Maicero Mexicano,
Guadalajara-Promex and Fidemol.
The five plants account for about
one-third of the nation's maize flour
production.
2003
A Canadian federal court denied
the government's request to stay an
earlier ruling that restored the Canadian
Wheat Board's monopoly over
barley exports and domestic sales of
malting barley. The earlier ruling,
which was made by Federal Judge
Marshall Rothstein, overturned
a government decision to enable
farmers and companies to sell barley
directly to domestic maltsters or
US customers. The government had
sought the stay of the ruling to allow
farmers and companies that had
entered into contracts to sell barley
to the US or domestic maltsters to
complete their sales without working
through the CWB, pending the
outcome of an appeal.

Louis Dreyfus Commodities Suisse
SA, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Louis Dreyfus Commodities and
Brooklyn Kiev, LLC, have entered
into an agreement to establish a joint
venture for the development and
management of a multi-commodity
terminal in the Port of Odesa,
Ukraine. The grain storage capacity
of the first stage is 70,000 tonnes.
The new terminal is expected to
start the first phase of its operation
in 2013, with Louis Dreyfus planning
to transship its first grain cargo

through the terminal in the coming
months. The designed capacity of
the complex will allow for the storage
and handling of up to 4 million
tonnes of grain a year. Total cost of
the project is $125 million, of which
$95 million is investors' funds.
Seaboard Corp. recently announced
that it has acquired a 50% interest
in Belarina Alimentos S/A, a Brazilian
food company engaged in flour
milling, pasta production and noodle
distribution. The remaining 50%
of the company is owned by CGG,
a leading Brazilian grain origination
and trading company. Belarina
began operations under its current
name in June 2010 through a consolidation
of separate businesses.
Since its founding, the company has
been expanding and modernizing its
milling base and enhanced its sales
and distribution network by acquiring
a new fleet of vehicles to better
serve its customers.
Richardson International Ltd. announced
on Oct. 1 that it is expanding
its grains and oilseeds merchandising
team by establishing international
subsidiaries in Europe and
Asia. Boon Guay will be working
out of Singapore as director, marketing,
Asia. Emmanuel Karrer will
be working in the European market
as director, marketing, Europe,
based out of Geneva, Switzerland.
