KEY FACTS
FOCUS ON
ITALY
Known primarily for its pasta, Italy is also a
prolific EU producer of rice and soybeans
by Chris Lyddon
Italy, a peninsular in the Mediterranean in the south of the European
Union, has a grains and oilseeds sector that is distinctive in many
ways. It's a big rice producer in European terms as well as producing
soybeans. Famed for its pasta, it is a large-scale user of durum wheat.
The Italian agrifood sector focuses on producing high-quality goods,
often under the EU's system of protected geographical names.
The International Grains Council (IGC) puts Italy's total 202122
grains production at 14.5 million tonnes, reduced from an earlier
estimate of 14.9 million. The 2020-21 crop was 15.1 million tonnes.
The total for 2021-22 includes 7 million tonnes of wheat, which is
down from the month-earlier forecast of 7.3 million tonnes, but still
up on 2020-21's crop of 6.5 million. The IGC's figure for 2021-22
wheat includes 4.1 million tonnes of durum, revised down from an
earlier forecast of 4.3 million, but still up on the 3.8 million tonnes
produced the previous year.
Italy's corn output is put at 5.9 million tonnes, unrevised from
the previous forecast and down from 6.7 million tonnes produced
in 2020-21. The IGC also forecasts a crop of 300,000 tonnes of sorghum,
unchanged from the previous year.
The European grain traders' organization COCERAL
puts Italy's total oilseeds production at
1.535 million tonnes in 2021, compared
with 1.541 million the year before. Soybeans
are the country's biggest oilseed
crop, at 1.224 million tonnes
in 2021-22, up from 1.221 million
the year before. The 2021
rapeseed crop is put at 47,000
tonnes, up from 44,000, while
output of sunflower seed is
estimated at 264,000, down
from 276,000 in 2020-21.
Italy is also the EU's second
largest producer of olive
oil, behind Spain. According to
an attaché report on the oilseeds
sector, dated April 16, 2021, the
country's 2021-22 output of olive oil
will be 260,000 tonnes.

Catholic with very small groups of Jehovah's
Witnesses and Protestants), Muslim 4.9%, unaffiliated
13.4%, other 0.9% (2020 est.).

of Tunisia.
Government: Parliamentary republic. Chief of
state: President Sergio Mattarella (since Feb. 3,
2015); head of government: Prime Minister Mario
Draghi (since Feb. 13, 2021).
Economy: Italy's economy comprises a developed
industrial north, dominated by private
companies, and a less-developed, highly subsidized,
agricultural south, with a legacy of unemployment
and underdevelopment. The Italian
economy is driven in large part by the manufacture
of high-quality consumer goods produced
by small- and medium-sized enterprises, many of
them family-owned. Italy also has a sizable underground
economy, which by some estimates
accounts for as much as 17% of GDP. These
activities are most common within the agriculture,
construction, and service sectors. Italy is
the third-largest economy in the euro zone, but
its exceptionally high public debt and structural
impediments to growth have rendered it vulnerable
to scrutiny by financial markets. Public
debt has increased steadily since 2007, reaching
131% of GDP in 2017. Investor concerns about
Italy and the broader euro-zone crisis eased in
2013, bringing down Italy's borrowing costs on
sovereign government debt from euro-era records.
The government still faces pressure from
investors and European partners to sustain its
efforts to address Italy's longstanding structural
economic problems, including labor market inefficiencies,
a sluggish judicial system, and a weak
banking sector. Italy's economy returned to modest
growth in late 2014 for the first time since
2011. In 2015-16, Italy's economy grew at about
1% each year, and in 2017 growth accelerated
to 1.5% of GDP. In 2017, overall unemployment
was 11.4%, but youth unemployment remained
high at 37.1%. GDP growth is projected to slow
slightly in 2018.
GDP per capita: $42,492 (2019 est.); inflation:
0.6% (2019 est.); unemployment: 9.88% (2019
est.).

Imports: $647.058 billion (2019 est.): crude petroleum,
cars, packaged medicines, natural gas,
refined petroleum (2019).
Agriculture: 2.1% (2017 est.) of GDP and 3.9% of
the labor force.
